Empowering Communities

While saving the environment one eco briquette at a time

together we can build a greener future!

“For every ton of bio charcoal we produce, we plant a tree in the zones most affected by deforestation.”

Towards a
greener future

Today we have come to a point, where humanity is facing one of the most difficult issues history has ever presented us with – the issue of saving our environment and preserving the natural order of things on planet Earth, the only home we know.

Ever since the realities of global climate change have been exposed, international teams of experts have been tirelessly trying to find ways to slow down and, hopefully, reverse the harmful consequences of human activities.

While the majority of the proposed solutions are still not quite feasible in many settings, some of them, such as bio charcoal technology, show very high potential and we are here to help people and businesses unleash it!

Climate change
in developing countries

Even though the global scientific community admits that it is extremely hard to predict the consequences of climate change, multiple reports have shown that the burden will most likely disproportionately fall on developing countries.

This is why we think the time to act is now! According to recent research, Tanzania is one of the biggest consumers of charcoal in the world (2 million tons per year) – 71% of all urban households depend on this source of energy. The situation in other African countries is very similar. For example, the annual charcoal usage is Kenya is expected to increase by 65% to a total of 5.1 million tons by 2030.

Such consumption patterns are highly unsustainable and lead to massive deforestation (thus contributing to global warming), soil deterioration and scores of respiratory conditions among its main direct users – women.

The solution?

While the solution to this issue is definitely complex and requires international collaboration, some effective steps can be taken even at the local scale.

One mitigation path is extensive production of biochar – charcoal produced from biomass, such as agricultural waste, via the process of pyrolysis. Conditional on proper production methods, bio charcoal releases 50% less  carbon dioxide compared to traditional charcoal without efficiency losses. Moreover, it can be used for the purposes of soil amendment and carbon sequestration, as well as to prevent the insurgence of respiratory diseases usually stemming from harmful charcoal fumes.

Given such a wealth of beneficial attributes, biochar became our weapon of choice in the fight against climate change and its consequences in the developing countries.
